Urinary Catheter

Introduction

It consists of passing a bladder catheter through the patient's urethra until placing its proximal end in the bladder and thus evacuating the urine contained therein. Key concepts:

    -Type of bladder catheter: A Foley catheter with a balloon at its end is used. The most common materials are latex and silicone (of choice in prolonged catheterization)

    -Thickness: The most frequently used is 16 French or Charriére.

    -Administration of a single dose of antibiotic as prophylaxis.

    -Necessary material:

        1.Sterile cloth and gloveS

        2.Vesical catheter and diuresis bag

        3.Urological lubricant

        4.Sterile syringe with at least 10cc of distilled water.




 Technique

    Patient in supine position and bed at 0º and after washing the patient's genitals with soap and water as well as applying local antiseptic, we will follow the following steps:

  1. Placement of the sterile field.
  2. Lubricate the urethra and allow the local anesthetic present in the lubricants to act.
  3. With the non-dominant hand, hold the penis and pull it upwards to begin the introduction of the catheter with the dominant hand gently and firmly until urine output is evident.
  4. With the catheter completely inserted in the bladder, the balloon of the catheter is filled with 10cc of distilled water.
